Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a forthcoming RPG (role-playing game) with some elements of a third-person shooter designed specifically for the PS3 (PlayStation 3) and published by Square Enix. Directed by Tetsuya Nomura, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being developed by the teams responsible for Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II, and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. It was stated that the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a world based on reality.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII involves the protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum, the last heir to an isolated nation, which holds the last Crystal protected by kings. Its isolation is due to the city’s resistance; to protect itself against invading heretics.
The setting of Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been said to initiate at the “clearing” of a long cold war between warring nations that revolved around the crystals. Like some of the previous games in the Final Fantasy series the game will feature large open fields in the world map which allow players to walk through almost anything on the field apart from the mountains. Nomura has also mentioned that the fields are truly vast and that it was very far to traverse from one end to another; thus, to facilitate easy navigation, the game will feature the return of vehicles such as an airship along with a form of fast travel between specific locations on the world map as well as a car, allowing players to easily traverse the large fields.
It is noted that weapons will have some sort of customization such as elemental attacks. It was also stated that most of the cut-scenes in the game will be real-time and the player will still be in control of the main character while the cut-scene is happening. The player will be able to run around and perform various actions during the cut-scenes. These new types of cut-scenes are dubbed “Real-Time Events” and will make up all the cut-scenes in Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Along with Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2, and Final Fantasy Type-0 it will become the fourth addition to the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series. According to developers even though while being part of the same world of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a stand alone story. According to the hype Final Fantasy Versus XIII will have the “Best Graphics yet” and will surely be one of the most highly anticipated games of the year.
As FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII has yet been released there is not much known, however we have gathered information straight from the director and footage that we have run across so far…so here is… FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII: A Look Inside the Game.
FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII: A Look Inside the Game – Straight From the Directors Mouth
The director of FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII (Tetsuya Nomura) has stated he aims to create previously unseen “tricky” battle sequences, reminiscent of the Advent Children film (CGI film). Nomura has revealed the game will be action oriented, and will play like a more realistic version of Kingdom Hearts with some elements of a third-person shooter similar to Dirge of Cerberus.
A brief demo video was shown during Tokyo Game Show back in 2009 and depicted Noctis (main character) running through a city which shifted from day to night, then to a field full of large creatures. Since then videos with actual gameplay have been released periodically. Another short video had Noctis waiting on a highway for a car during the day, and as he gets in the car it drives off. The footage was displayed in real time, and had significantly improved the lighting, character models and environments.
Then at Square Enix’s conference in January 2011, a long section of gameplay footage was shown in a new trailer. It depicted Noctis walking, right after the scene with Stella (the antagonists), and running after several explosions happen. Noctis is shown fighting against several enemies, which include soldiers, a Behemoth, and various monsters. The damage dealt by the attacks is shown on screen similar to other FINAL FANTASY titles. As shown in the trailer, Noctis can have characters assist him during battles somewhat like the paradigm system of FINAL FANTASY XIII. Players will be able to switch between characters on the fly, allowing the opportunity to create multi-character combos. A first person aiming mode for firearms has also been shown, exclusive to the character Prompto. Also, the player seems to be able to control mechanic structures, such as tanks or robots. The footage also depicted a menu titled “EX Arts,” but its function remains unknown.
FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII: A Look Inside the Game – The Fight
Here is more on FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII: A Look Inside the Game on gameplay. Players will find a big world map with vast fields where they will be able to explore as far as the eye can reach, with the exception for mountains (until later in the game). Nomura says the game is not open, but is more like the 2D Final Fantasy games in HD and in third person view. The player will be able to drive a car and fly airships just like in older Final Fantasy titles too. Nomura also says the day and night cycles and cloud formations are done by physical calculations. It was decided to be made this way to have a smooth change between the cycles and to have a much more dynamic lighting system, which reflects the mood of a certain region/place. The game will be seamless and the only loading the player will experience is between large areas. The loading will occur while watching an event scene to give players a more immersive experience.
The battle system of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is to draw the nostalgic feeling from old Final Fantasy titles and blend it with a whole new concept. The action and pace will be similar to what is found in Kingdom Hearts but united with new mechanics. Battles will take place in real-time environments using all regions of the field, from up high buildings to down low streets. Nomura has said the power of the PS3 will feature battles that take place in areas with great differences in height, just like in the trailer, and will have to fight using the full environment. This means fighting what’s both in front of the player and above and below (vertical battles).
Another trailer shows Noctis selecting from a number of different weapons and warping around to defeat the enemy soldiers in front of him. The various weapons in the game will have different methods of attack, and some will even be usable as shields to go along with Noctis’s crystal power (unique power for characters). Weapons will have some sort of customization element as well. Nomura explained players won’t be able to warp freely to every spot, but it will be possible to warp to the location where the player has placed their sword. The player can throw their sword and warp to that location as well. This is one area that is being tested on so it’s a matter of time to see if this all makes it into the final product.
Nomura has also stated that Noctis’s eyes and hair change with his emotions, as well as different actions in battle (such as in Dissidia). There will be a sub window that copies Noctis’s expression that will be shown at the bottom of the screen.
We are deeply impressed with the characters, graphics and battle system. While there is much more to be shown it looks awesome so far. We here at FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII: A Look Inside the Game agree that this looks to be yet another hit with fans and new gamers alike and we can’t wait to see how it plays out.

FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII Trailer, Screenshots, and Preview – What We Know
The story, like Final Fantasy XIII, focuses around crystals. The main character, Noctis Lucis Caelum who is part of a lineage of kings, but is not yet king himself leads the country holding the last crystal, which is beneficial to his country’s military, political, and economic standing. Because of increasingly apparent modernization in contrast to neighboring nations (making them equivalent to a developed nation), Noctis’s kingdom has isolated itself from the outside world. At one time, all the other countries also possessed a crystal, yet lost them in warfare. They pooled their resources into weapons, granting them firearms in exchange for swords and magic. A long cold war has gone on about the use of the crystal. Recently, a peace treaty was talked about between the countries, but a group of marauders are beginning to break it.
There also exists a mythology in the kingdom of Tenebrae, an opposing country, about a goddess of death, the Goddess Etro. She is said to greet the souls of the deceased, and open the door to the afterlife. When that door opens, the released souls burst out in a streak of light that ascends to heaven. However, very few people are able to see the light, and those who can see it are given power from the Kingdom of the Dead. During their conversation, Noctis and Stella mention they can see the light, and the former wonders if they are dying.
The game’s focus is to examine the characters’ humanity and distinguish it from the fantasy setting inother titles in the series. Nomura (the director) is “trying to propose new vision of how a Final Fantasy game can be. The game’s going to be more human than the science-fiction caricature … and will focus around current world events – and in that sense it’s darker”.
The world of FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII takes place in what seems similar to the real world, with modern technology such as cars and highways, but also contains countries with medieval elements, such as castles and armored soldiers. According to the developers, the locations in the game are based on real world locations. So far, the following replicas have been seen or confirmed by the developers:
Saint Mark’s Square and Basilica (from Venice, Italy)
Manchester (England)
a US gas station and Shinjuku (an area of Tokyo, Japan).

This is an extra bonus page for the FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII Extras. Kweh ~ Ok so while not really focusing on the main topic this article is more of a fun run through of other titles and extra things we have mentioned throughout the site. So without further ado here is a quick history and a look at the FINAL FANTASY Franchise.
FINAL FANTASY developed by Squaresoft company was one of the first multiplatform RPGs and the first installation of the franchise known as…. Final Fantasy. Considered one of the most influential titles ever FINAL FANTASY has withstood the test of time. It was first released on the NES back in 1987 and has since been released on multiple Nintendo, Sony, and phone apps. The first and still ever popular 8-bit characters have been the base of nearly every Final Fantasy game to come after.
FINAL FANTASY II also by Squaresoft was for the family computer and had many key elements in upcoming Final Fantasy games. Released in 1988 this was the first Final Fantasy game to introduce chocobos and the recurring character “Cid”. It also eliminated the experience point way of leveling and instead introduced the way of activity-based progression.
FINAL FANTASY III is the first game to introduce the “job system” in the series for which the Final Fantasy genre has become famous for. You control four characters which start out as one job class and then later they become interchangeable. It is also the first time the abilities steal, jump, and summon are introduced.
FINAL FANTASY IV (1991) is regarded as a landmark and the first major RPG of the series. It is considered to be one of the first role-playing games to feature a complex, involving plot, and is thought to have pioneered the idea of dramatic story telling in an RPG. This game was the first in the series to allow the player to control up to five characters in your party; while previous games had limited the party to four. It also marks the first appearance of Square’s Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which differed from the turn-based designs of previous RPGs. The ATB system centers on the player inputting orders for the characters in real time during battles.
FINAL FANTASY V (1992) has been celebrated by fans for the greatly expanded job system which allows even more freedom of customization than any other Final Fantasy title before it. FINAL FANTASY V also notes the first time that the Blue mage, Time mage, and Mime job classes appear.
FINAL FANTASY VI was released for the SNES in 1994. FINAL FANTASY VI is in my opinion and others to be considered one of the greatest games of all time. This game features one of the only villains (Kefka) that can be considered to actually have succeeded in his goal. It also had the first appearance of the first vision of the popular “Limit Break” command.
We are Halfway through and hope you are enjoying a nostalgia moment if not the first time with this recap on a history of Final Fantasy with FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII Extras. I’m sure all you fan boys know what is next so without further delay next up….
FINAL FANTASY VII (1997) was the first game in the Final Fantasy installation to use 3D graphics and to be released on the playstation marking yet another technological era in gaming. FINAL FANTASY VII is the best-selling title in the series with nearly 10 million copies sold worldwide. This is another title to be considered the best of all time and is for sure in the top 3 games of the Final Fantasy series.
FINAL FANTASY VIII released in 1999 saw the first example of consistently use realistically proportioned characters. It had a different leveling system that many fans loved and others hated by having a set amount of experience points from level to level. As part of the game theme various designs were given to its locations using the style of internationally familiar places, while also maintaining a fantasy atmosphere. Inspiration ranged from ancient Egyptian and Greek architecture, to the city of Paris, France, to an idealized futuristic European society.
FINAL FANTASY IX was developed to be more of a fantasy oriented setting compared to the last two playstation predecessors with a deep character development system that was meant to suck you in. The setting is inspired by Norse and Northern European mythology. With a less serious point of view this game was meant to really involve the player and make you feel the emotion of the characters and involve you in the story. It definitely brought a felling of nostalgia back from some of the original title in the series.
FINAL FANTASY X is another the first in the Final Fantasy genre to feature voice acting. Originally released for the PS2 in 2001 it marks the transition from entirely pre-rendered backdrops to fully three-dimensional areas. The influence has been identified as South Pacific, Thailand, and Japan as a major importance on the cultural and geographic design of the main city of Spira. FINAL FANTASY X also involved motion capture and skeletal animation technology to fit the lip movement with the voice acting.
FINAL FANTASY XI also known as Final Fantasy XI Online, is a MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing game). First released for the PS2 in 2002 by Squaresoft and then later for windows (PC) in 2003 and then Xbox 360 and credited to be the systems first cross platform MMORPG. The windows release also marks the merger of Squaresoft and Enix to make Square Enix. FINAL FANTASY XI differs from other previous Final Fantasy titles in that the battles fought are all real time and no random encounters. Players are also able to customize their avatars race, gender, body size, hair color, face, and job class anyway they chose. There are currently 20 different jobs and it still has a strong user base even today after nearly 10 years.
FINAL FANTASY XII was the last game in the Final Fantasy series to be released exclusively to the playstation platform. Introduced are several innovations such as: battles occur without transition to a separate screen, a customizable system known as gambit to control the actions of npcs (non player character), and an experience point like system that allows you to equip different equipment and armor. The inspiration for the gambit system was derived from american football where each member of the team has a specific job to do. The collector’s edition included the original game packaged in a metallic case along with a special bonus disc, which contains FINAL FANTASY XII developer interviews, an art gallery, U.S. and Japanese trailers, and a featurette entitled “History of Final Fantasy”, which gave a brief overview of most released and upcoming Final Fantasy games.
FINAL FANTASY XIII is yet another mark in the console history books where it is the first Final Fantasy title to be released to the PS3. Much like the last game it allows you to customize most everything you can equip and do in battle. FINAL FANTASY XIII is the flagship of the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection upon later will be released are FINAL FANTASY XIII-2, FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII, and FINAL FANTASY Type-0. The setting of this game was intended by the art team to be reminiscent of the United States. It has been stated that this is the fastest selling Final Fantasy title ever with over 1 million copies sold on the first day.
Hope that was both entertaining and factual for you with all those nostalgic games. We are sure there will be many more upcoming titles in the near future and we look forward to them soon. And the last rundown for now it is FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII Extras top 3 picks in order are: FINAL FANTASY VI, FINAL FANTASY, and FINAL FANTSY VII.
